'Dynamics of Democracy and Instability in Myanmar' is an analytical study of Myanmar’s complex political development, focusing on the country’s long struggle between democratic aspirations and military authoritarianism. Since independence in 1948, Myanmar has experienced repeated political crises, military interventions, fragile democratic transitions, and continuing ethnic conflicts. The book examines the historical, political, social, economic, and geopolitical factors responsible for this instability.A major focus of the book is the dominant role of the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces) in the country’s political system. It discusses the democratic transition beginning in 2011, the electoral success of the National League for Democracy (NLD), and the military coup of February 2021. The book also highlights the importance of ethnic conflicts, particularly the demands of ethnic communities for greater autonomy and political recognition. The study further examines the roles of ethnic groups, Buddhist monks, media, political elites, and external actors in shaping Myanmar’s political trajectory. It gives particular attention to Myanmar’s relations with India, China, and the United States and considers how regional and international interests influence the country’s political crisis. Overall, the book argues that Myanmar’s instability cannot be understood simply as a domestic political failure. Rather, it reflects deeper contradictions associated with democratic transition in a multi-ethnic, post-colonial society. The book seeks to contribute to a better understanding of democracy, authoritarianism, ethnic politics, regional relations, peace, federal democracy, and national reconciliation in Myanmar.
