The book covers the concept, design, financial aspects of mass housing, and case studies on concept testing. With the introduction of the low-cost concept of housing, efforts have been made to outline the policy and practice prevailing in India. Further, Laurie baker`s eco-friendly concepts and prospects of low-cost housing, sustainable and affordable building materials, community housing and services, urban sprawl & affordable housing, earthen housing materials, and supply chain management in the housing industry have been portrayed with due attention. Affordable housing design has been analyzed with reference to cost-efficient housing structures with mud, houses for the middle-class in urban areas, country initiatives for rural poor some novel Australian housing concepts, and low-cost bamboo-based housing. Financial aspects of mass housing cover the micro-finance model for affordable rural housing and innovative finance for the urban poor. The affordable houses have been tested with six case studies such as Vigyan Ashram, Pabal on using Bamboo for Low-cost Bamboo; Janaadhar, Bengaluru on Homes for the Poor; COSTFORD, Kerala in Affordable Housing Advocacy; COSTFORD, Kerala on Sustainable Low-cost Technology; Janaadhar, Bengaluru on Affordable Urban Homes and Indicare trust, Delhi on Housing Micro-finance.
