She and the Scales of Justice: Women, Crime & the Law — A Modern Criminology is a rigorous study of women’s multifaceted relationship with India’s criminal justice system. Recognizing women’s vulnerable position as victims, accused and witnesses. It traces how patriarchal traditions embedded in statutory and personal law perpetuate asymmetries that diminish autonomy, dignity, property rights and access to justice. The book challenges conventional criminology built on androcentric perspectives that misread gender-specific pathways to victimization, leading to inadequate protection. It examines enduring domestic and sexual violence, underreporting, investigative insensitivity and economic abuse through deprivation of resources. Addressing cyber harassment, trafficking and cross-border disputes, it argues for victim-centered rehabilitation over criminalization. The work reveals a justice system caught between insufficient protection and punitive excess, silent constitutional promises of equality. The book envisions holistic reform through constitutional morality, institutional sensitivity and coordinated engagement among judiciary, legislature and society.
