Surgery first is an alternative methodology to conventional orthognathic surgery, which performs an orthognathic surgery directly, without the previous orthodontic preparation, followed by a post-surgical orthodontic treatment to achieve the desired final dental alignment. Shortening the total treatment time and accelerated tooth movement after surgery due to altered bone remodeling are the most frequently reported advantages of the surgery-first approach. This concept of surgery-first and orthodontics second is called SFOA (Surgery-First- Orthognathic Approach) or SFA (Surgery-First approach). As usual, new ideas in any field go through a predictable cycle: initial rejection by nearly everyone; then acceptance by a few, while ignored by the majority; finally, and adoption by almost everyone. Minimal information is available to orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons about this procedure. Thus, this book- a compilation of all the updated reviews and practices bridges the gap to provide a comprehensive guide.
