The present work is an analysis of monastic history from the lower social, economic and cultural background of the entrants who embraced the monastic life. Christian monastic history beginning from Antony of the desert down to the centuries, studied from this prospective in the first part. As the author hails from India, the monastic traditions such as Ancient Hindu, Budhist and Jain traditions too are studied in the second part. Since the author belongs to a Catholic monastic tradition, the study is also extended to the study of present entrants to different Congregations belonging to the Benedictine Order in India. Author attempts a response in monastic life for the problems that arise in the society due to differences in social, economic and cultural backgrounds.
