Difference between Proofreading and Editing? What do you need?

Difference between Proofreading and Editing? What do you need?

The writing part is the major task but so is the editing part as well. There are a lot of things that are needed to be looked at after the writing part. Manuscript/story editing is one of the most important steps before you publish your book. Read: How to self publish a book for free? What is editing? Editing is the process which helps the writer revise their content, plot, structure, grammar, settings, and rewriting if needed. Editing focuses on everything from the minor to major detail that needs to change. What is proofreading? After when the editing is done rigorously depending on the need of the manuscript – proofreading is done to make sure no errors are left and it is all grammatically perfect. Basic difference between proofreading and editing:   Proofreading Editing 1. Performed on the document’s final version Performed on the document’s first draught and continues until the manuscript is finalised 2. Surface-level concerns are addressed. focuses on the essential aspects of writing 3. A universally recognised and consistent definition The scope of editing determines the definition. 4. Misspellings, grammatical and punctuation errors, inconsistencies, formatting issues, and so on are all eliminated. Changes the wording to improve clarity, readability, and smooth narrative. 5. Word count decrease is not included. If necessary, word reduction is included. 6. Makes already excellent writing error-free The overall writing quality has improved. 7. Does not necessitate extensive consultation with the author; a shorter turnaround time Collaborative because the editor must collaborate with the author Slightly longer turnaround time (as the amount of work required is more) 8. Surface-level concerns are addressed. Performed on the document’s first draught and continues until the manuscript is finalised Read: How to publish short stories online for free? Few pointers to keep in mind while editing or proofreading – Remove all noise and other distractions. If you concentrate, you will catch more errors. Do not revise your paper in the same session in which you wrote it. Leave it alone for a bit, even a few days, and then return to it. This will provide you with fresh eyes and enable you to detect more faults. When you’ve gone over it as thoroughly as you can, have someone else read it. The second set of eyes can see twice as much as one. Don’t rely solely on spell and grammar checks. They, too, make mistakes. Determine if editing on a computer or a printed page is more convenient for you. Keep your resources nearby so you can immediately look up anything you’re unsure of. Some useful resources are dictionaries, Thesaurus, Handbooks, Handouts, etc.. Editing or Proofreading – which one do you really need? A manuscript has different versions – as you edit it each draft becomes a newer version. Editing is more thorough and has chances to improve a manuscript from better to best; it is what defines the story, plot, characters, structure etc.. Whether the book is fiction, non-fiction, or poetry – the editing process depends on the subject matter too. Proofreading is a bit more like winding up the manuscript. It clears up the edges and smoothens the missing mistakes. It’s like plating the food that you’ve prepared. To decide what you need to do with your manuscript is as easy as cooking maggie. Whether you write well or not – everyone needs editing. After writing the entire story, take a break from your story and get back to it in a few days. Read it as a reader – if you think that it needs a lot of rephrasing, then it needs editing layers. If it seems that it needs a few grammar tweaks then it needs proofreading. Even though a layer of proofreading is of utmost necessity after editing layers. Read: Most popular children’s story books to read. How to publish short stories online for free?

Thinking to publish short stories online for free? Sometimes a small step is what a budding writer needs to become a self-published author. But writing a whole novel is something that comes naturally – you need practice, patience and the determination to write. Short stories could be a small step to writing a novel. Instead of jumping in the ocean, practice in the swimming pool. Read: 10 Best thriller books to read in 2022. What is a Short Story? A fictional prose narrative that is shorter than a novel, usually dealing with a few characters, aiming for the unity of effect, and frequently focusing on mood creation rather than plot. For Examples – You Will Never Be Forgotten by Mary South, What is not yours is not yours by Helen Oyeyemi, etc… Short stories are typically 10 to 25 pages long, making them far shorter than novels, with only a handful nearing novella length. Anything fewer than 1,000 words is referred to as a “short story” or “flash fiction”, and anything less than 300 words is appropriately referred to as “microfiction”. You may also like: How to Write an Author Bio | BlueRoseOne.com How to write a short story? A short story is like writing a novel but in a much shorter version. There are different ways to write a short story but the main elements have to be included. Inciting Incident Rising Action Climax Falling Action Let’s break into the steps of writing a short story: Try to clear your mind and understand that a short story is not a novel They have very common characteristics but the only difference is length. While novel writers can make the story as long as they want but the short story writers have to stay within a confined word limit. Plot should be engaging and still kind of obvious Trying to be mysterious while writing a short story can be a difficult task – as we have a word limit with us. Try to say a lot in fewer words because that is how short stories work. Less characters is your way to go Having a couple of characters is not how you should roll while writing a short story. Each character needs to have closure in a story and that would be a bit difficult when you are working under a limit. Create conflict Conflict is always a ‘YES YES’. Conflict is the key character no matter what. Try to be more creative with the conflict as it builds up the climax and catches people off-guard. Backstory? Maybe The backstory isn’t a thing that can be suggested in a short story until necessary. But sometimes a backstory is important to explain how the character is the way it is. And that is when your quotes come in – less is more! Narration + Dialogues = Wow Narrations and Dialogues should have a balance. Your story will be more natural when it will have dialogue and it will appeal to people, more. Also, there is no greater way to create drama than with precise discourse. EDIT!! Editing is your saving grace. It is popularly said that “To be a good writer, one needs to be a ruthless editor.” This is the time to examine the backstory and determine how important it is to the plot. Remember that just because a story is brief doesn’t make it any easier to write. Short stories are the best examples of how a writer can work with less words and still bring colors to the story. Once a person becomes an self-published author from a writer, they take a step into the world of business which makes them authorpreneur. Their profits, losses, and marketing are all taken and planned by the author itself. TRADITIONAL AUTHORS Traditional authors have a lot of support from the publishing house. The publisher pays an advance fee to authors who are traditionally published before the book is published. This advance is the publishers’ forecast of how well the book will sell in the first 6 to 12 months after publication. A big advance fee implies that the publisher will market the book widely in order to repay their investment. However, if the book does not make enough money to cover the advance, the author may find up owing the publisher. SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS Unlike self-published authors, traditionally published authors do not have to worry about the costs and time involved in developing a marketing strategy for their work. The benefit is that self-published authors earn substantially higher royalties. A good self-published author who has invested in superb editing and cover design but does not have the support of a regular publisher will be unable to charge as much for their book as a published author would. The amount of books a self-published author may be able to sell is also substantially smaller than that of their competitors, particularly if they are just starting out. This is because they lack a reputation and a publisher who will market their work to bookstores and/or libraries all over the world. Writing a book on an online platform like Wattpad, BlueRoseONE, WebNovel, etc can help you know and understand what your reader actually likes to read.  WRITE YOUR CHARACTERS Writing a story altogether is a big task so start with your characters.
