- Telugu is the native language of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Yanam district of Puducherry. Telugu-speaking migrants can also be found in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, some portions of Jharkhand, and the Kharagpur district of West Bengal.
- Many Telugu immigrants live in Gujarat, Goa, Bihar, Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Telugu is the fourth most spoken language in the Indian subcontinent, behind Hindi, Bengali, and Marathi, with 7.2 percent of the population. Telugu is spoken by 7.0 percent of the population in Karnataka and 5.6 percent in Tamil Nadu.
- Beginning in the 10th or 11th century, the literature is primarily poetry and secular and religious epics, with the ataka (“century” of lines) being a popular genre.
- Pampadu, also known as Pampana, the Adi Kavi of Kannada, was the first poet to compose in Telugu.
- The golden period of Telugu literature occurred between the 16th and 17th centuries, when Sri Krishnadevaraya became interested in Telugu literature. Other than Sri Krishna Devaraya’s Amukthamalyada, Manucharitra by Peddana is an exceptional Mahakavya. As Telugu literature flourished in the south at Samsthanas such as Madurai, Tanjavur, and so on, this period was called the ‘Southern Period.’
