Looking to publish an Italian Book? Italian, also known as lingua Italiana, is a Romance language of the Indo-European language family that evolved from the Roman Empire’s Vulgar Latin. This language is spoken by around 85 million people (2022).

When regional and minority languages are included, Italian is considered the most direct descendent of Latin, being the closest to it among the national languages and the least different from it, along with Sardinian. Italy, Switzerland (Ticino and the Grisons), San Marino, and Vatican City all have Italian as an official language. Western Istria recognizes it as an official minority (Croatia and Slovenia).

During the Middle Ages, Latin was the established written language in Europe, despite the fact that the vast majority of people were illiterate and only a few were fluent in the language.

The standard Italian language has its poetic and literary origins in the writings of 12th-century Tuscan and Sicilian writers, and, while the grammar and core lexicon remain largely unchanged from those used in Florence in the 13th century, the modern standard of the language was largely shaped by relatively recent events.

The Renaissance era, known in Italian as il Rinascimento, was viewed as a time of rebirth, which is the precise meaning of both renaissance (from French) and rinascimento (Italian).

Contact with foreign languages has heavily influenced Italian dialects outside of Italy (English in New York; Spanish in Buenos Aires). The Judeo-Italian (Italkian) language is practically extinct; during World War II, an entire colony of 6,000 Corfu Jews who spoke a Venetan dialect were slaughtered.

The Italian sound system is very close to that of Latin or Spanish. Its syntax is likewise comparable to that of other modern Romance languages, with adjective and noun agreement, the usage of definite and indefinite articles, the loss of noun declension for case, two genders (masculine and feminine), and an elaborate system of perfect and progressive tenses for the verb.

The most noticeable distinction between Italian and French or Spanish is that it does not utilize -s or -es to produce noun plurals, instead using -e for most feminine words and -i for masculine words (and some feminine words).
